CRITICAL THINKING

Everyone thinks; it is our nature to do so. But much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed or down-right prejudiced. Yet the quality of our life and that of what we produce, make, or build depends precisely on the quality of our thought. Shoddy thinking is costly, both in money and in quality of life. Excellence in thought, however, must be systematically cultivated.  Critical thinking is the art of analyzing and evaluating thinking with a view to improving it.

SELF EFFICACY

Self-efficacy, a concept originally proposed by the psychologist Albert Bandura, refers to an individual's belief in their capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments.  Self-efficacy affects every area of human endeavor. By determining the beliefs a person holds regarding their power to affect situations, self-efficacy strongly influences both the power a person actually has to face challenges competently and the choices a person is most likely to make.

A strong sense of self-efficacy promotes human accomplishment and personal well-being. A person with high self-efficacy views challenges as things that are supposed to be mastered rather than threats to avoid. These people are able to recover from failure faster and are more likely to attribute failure to a lack of effort. They approach threatening situations with the belief that they can control them. These things have been linked to lower levels of stress and a lower vulnerability to depression.

In contrast, people with a low sense of self-efficacy view difficult tasks as personal threats and shy away from them. Difficult tasks lead them to look at the skills they lack rather than the ones they have. It is easy for them to lose faith in their own abilities after a failure. Low self-efficacy can be linked to higher levels of stress and depression.

PERSONAL MASTERY

Personal Mastery is the process of living and working purposefully in synchronization with the eight dimensions of  wellness and the six human needs towards a vision, in alignment with one's values and in a state of constant learning about oneself and the reality in which one exists.  In order to have this constant in learning, one must gain and reinforce self-awareness with a purpose and direction in seeking understanding.  To learn more about personal mastery, please take note of "The Fifth Discipline" by systems scientist, Peter Senge.
