PHYSICAL FITNESS TEST

The intent of the Physical Fitness Test is to provide an assessment of the candidate’s over-all fitness and health. Physical fitness testing is designed to identify and ensure the maintenance of a base level of physical fitness essential for every Deputy, regardless of their assignment. Each Deputy’s fitness program must be developed to take this base level of conditioning and raise it to help meet or exceed mission-related physical performance demands. Training periods solely devoted toward meeting the physical fitness requirements are highly discouraged.

The Physical Fitness Test provides a measure of upper and lower body muscular endurance. It is a performance test that indicates a candidate’s ability to perform physically and handle his or her own body weight. The Physical Fitness Test standards are adjusted for age and physiological differences between the genders. The Physical Fitness Test consists of push-ups, sit-ups, and a 1 mile run, done in that order and on the same day and recorded on LESP 75-Physical Fitness Test Record Form.  Candidates are allowed 5 minutes rest between events. The test period is defined as the period of time that elapses from the start to the finish of the three events. Candidates must attain a score of at least 80 points on each event and an overall score of at least 240 points.

In law enforcement, a holistic health and fitness approach is one of several keys to improve protection against environmental and mental stress and improving cognitive performance.  It is a complex multidimensional interrelationship that includes elements of cognitive and social well-being; health promotion and protection; nutritional fitness; hydration; weight control; sleep, rest, and recovery; and adaptation to and protection from environmental conditions. This approach requires developing a culture that promotes a comprehensive lifestyle of fitness and health that enhances quality of life, physical performance, and resilience.
